During this entire year there has been an intense nostalgia for the trends of the 1970s. Flared bell bottoms, bright psychedelic patterns, and Farrah Fawcett-inspired hairstyles have been all over the place. The groovy decade even inspired a whole TikTok trend where users created voluminous ’70s hairstyles and flipped their hair in time to a retro song — and it looks like that influence is reaching the red carpet at the 2021 Met Gala.
The theme for the night is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” giving attendees an opportunity to celebrate and honor American fashion in all of its different forms, and what better decade to look at than the ’70s. It’s full of great inspiration whether you’re looking to legends like Cher or Donna Summer. At the Met Gala, voluminous ’70s hairstyles that resemble these musical icons made their way onto the red carpet, so we had to compile some of our favorites.
First up is our lovely host Keke Palmer. It may be her first time hosting (and attending) the Met Gala red carpet, but she absolutely excelled and looked gorgeous while doing it. Palmer arrived in a bedazzled black dress with a deep back and chose a dramatic smoky eye to complement the dress. As for the hair? It’s giving us such Diana Ross with it’s texture volume. We love the layers in the hair and how it falls a few inches below Palmer’s shoulders. It pairs well with her smoky makeup and dark long-sleeve dress.
