Novak Djokovic’s 2021 was a truly magical year. The world number one is achieving incredible results, astonishing both the opponents on the circuit and the professionals and the Serbian champion is likely to reach the Golden Slam (Four Slams and Olympics in the same year) at the age of 34.
. In this 2021 Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, and now points to the Tokyo Olympics that will be played in a few days and that have seen an incredible number of casualties in recent days, many due to the increased infections in the Olympic village.
Soon after, it will be time for “Nole” to focus on the US Open to try and win the Grand Slam, a feat that was never accomplished in the Open Era and that we have not seen in the tennis world since Rod Laver. Speaking to reporters just before the start of the Olympics, Novak Djokovic admitted that his schedule has been tough lately.
But at the same time, the world No. 1 claimed that his record of victories this year has given him the confidence to aim for the final prize in Tokyo. “It’s exhausting, but I’m sure of all the wins this season,” said Djokovic.
“Winning a medal is my goal, and it is no secret that I am aiming for gold. After Tokyo 2020, I will start thinking about the US Open.” The 34-year-old claimed that his final decision came down to a desire to represent his country on the most important sporting stage of all.
“Representing his country at the Olympics is a feeling like no other,” Djokovic said. “I’m not very happy to play without fans present or the various coronavirus restrictions in place in Japan, but representing your country at the Olympics is a must.”
Kevin Anderson pays tribute to Novak Djokovic
Kevin Anderson recently gave his thoughts on a variety of topics, including the dominance of the Big 3 and whether the ATP Player Council intends to work with the Novak Djokovic-led PTPA in introducing new reforms for players.
“Yeah it’s been amazing (to see) the success those three guys have had. Very unique time, I don’t think you’re necessarily going to see that in a very long time, you know,”Anderson said after his victory over Jenson Brooksby in the Newport final.
“Three guys, who own the majority of the records in the sport, are all playing at the same time, it’s very unique across different sports. A lot of people have been captivated by those rivalries, some point it’s important to see new faces.
But it seems they all are playing some great tennis, Novak especially,” Anderson said. “Djokovic’s had an amazing year so far, going for some more history at the US Open. It’s a really big storyline, soon you’re gonna have the chance to do it and it’s incredible. It certainly adds discussion in the years to come on who’s potentially the best of those 3 players.”
