Barbora Krejcikova pips Tereza Martincova for Prague Open crown

Barbora Krejcikova claimed the Prague Open title after beating fellow Czech Tereza Martincova in the final on Sunday. Krejcikova won 6-2, 6-0 in just 65 minutes. Entering into the match, Martincova had a 2-1 lead against Krejcikova in their head-to-head.

However, as in their last match, Krejcikova was able to dominate against her 78th-ranked compatriot and rival. Krejcikova faced just two break points in the match, both of which came in the second game of the first set. While the first set remained on serve up to the fourth game, Krejcikova changed the course of the match completely thereafter.

She first won the next four consecutive games in the set before adding six more games to her tally to sweep the match.

Prague Open: Barbora Krejcikova joins elite list

The 25-year-old finished with 26 winners while her compatriot had just six to her name in the match.

All throughout this week in the Czech capital, Krejcikova didn’t drop a set en route to the trophy. This win marks Krejcikova’s third WTA title of this season and career). She previously went on a 15-match winning streak that spanned the Strasbourg International and the French Open – both of which she won – and the first four rounds at Wimbledon.

Including this match against Martincova on Sunday, Krejcikova has now won 20 of the 21 matches she’s played across these four events. Her only loss came at Wimbledon to eventual champion, Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round.

Following her win at the Prague Open, Barbora Krejcikova became the only sixth Czech player to win the title at home. The first Czech woman to win here was Radka Zrubakova in 1992. Prior to Krejcikova’s win, Petra Kvitova won the tournament in 2018.

Other Czech players to have won at home include Krejcikova’s former coach, the late Jana Novotna in 1998, Karolina Pliskova in 2015 and Lucie Safarova in 2016. Photo Credit: Prague Open Twitter
