Borna Coric withdraws from Wimbledon

Croatian tennis star Borna Coric is set to miss the entire grass season as he has withdrawn from Wimbledon. Coric, ranked at No. 30 in the world, has made four main draw appearances at The Championships throughout his career.

Coric tried to make the Wimbledon main draw in 2014 but he was beaten in the qualifying first round. One year later in 2015, Coric made his Wimbledon main draw debut — when he beat Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round before losing to Andreas Seppi in his following match.

In his last three Wimbledon appearances, former world No. 12 Coric picked up three first round exits.

Coric underwent a shoulder surgery in May

“Hi everyone, I am currently in New York as I had surgery on my right shoulder yesterday.

I have been dealing with shoulder pain for some time now and despite trying a whole range of recovery techniques it was clear a more permanent solution was needed. After talking to leading doctors together with my team, I decided the best option was to have surgery,” Coric said in a Facebook post in May.

“The operation went extremely well, I am very thankful to the HSS Sports Medicine Institute team and especially doctor David Altchek. “Now it is time to recover and work hard to be back on court soon. Thank you for all the support as always.”

Coric has been out for quite some time as he hasn’t played since March. Coric, the top-ranked Croatian tennis player, has played only three tournaments so far in 2021. Coric kicked off his campaign at the Murray River Open in Melbourne, where he made the quarterfinal before losing to eventual champion Dan Evans.

Coric didn’t have a deep campaign at the Australian Open as he beat Guido Pella in the first round but lost to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round. In his last tournament played in Rotterdam — Coric made the quarterfinal before losing to Marton Fucsovics.
