Solskjaer reveals Man United’s stance of signing a striker following Cavani extension

Edinson Cavani staying at Man United

Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United last summer after his PSG contract had expired.

The Uruguayan had a slightly slow start to life in England as he looked to build up fitness and deal with injury issues.

Towards the end of 2020/21 though, with a decent number of games under his belt, Cavani really began to showcase his true ability.

The hitman would net 10 and assist three in 26 league outings last term, a pretty good record considering a lot of those appearances were as a sub.

In the Europa League meanwhile, Cavani would score six and assist three in his last four outings for Man United.

So, it was no doubt music to United fans’ ears when it was confirmed that the ex-PSG star was staying at Old Trafford for the forthcoming campaign.

Will Man United sign another striker?

Cavani’s extension, however, will no doubt have left fans wondering what the situation is now regarding United’s potential hunt for a striker.

If Cavani had left, it was quite apparent that the Red Devils needed some fresh legs up top as Anthony Martial, who scored four in 22 league outings last term, is not up to the job of being their main no.9.

Cavani’s presence for another year may have clouded the decision to pursue a striker somewhat.

But recent comments from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appear to have cleared things up a bit.

When speaking about Cavani’s extension recently, the Norwegian stated that him staying does not mean United are not looking for someone who can challenge or learn from him:

“It was very important, because we have not seen close to his best yet. He came here in October and had not played football in seven months.

“It takes time to get in shape, even if he takes care of himself. He got some injuries and little things that bothered him, and it is only recently that we have begun to see some of the best of him. When he gets this experience and a run-up, he will be better than this year, despite the fact that he is getting older.

“I am very happy that it has happened, but that does not mean that we are not looking for someone who can challenge or learn from him.”
