Cape Smokey in Novia Scotia Opens New Gondola

After numerous delays, Ski Cape Smokey in Novia Scotia opened up their brand new gondola on August 26th. The summit was originally serviced by an old chairlift, but this new gondola makes the lift handicap accessible and a prime summer attraction for the area. According to the Cape Breton Post, the eight-person gondola was built by Leitner Poma and takes between four to eight minutes to get to the top, depending on the speed and the season.

It is the first gondola in Atlantic Canada, which consists of the provinces of Novia Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Global News Halifax made the trip up to Cape Smokey to talk with Cape Smokey’s Development Director, Martin Kejval, about the new gondola, and their major plans for the future.

This is the first project in the transformative future plans for Ski Cape Smokey. Work will soon begin on remodeling their base lodge, which will be ready for this winter. Snowmaking is finally being added to the mountain this winter as well, and they are planning on adding new trails to the mountain for skiing at some point. Other base projects that will soon commence are the construction of a micro-brewery, and eighty condos to help provide lodging to winter guests. The big project at the resort will be the tree walk, which will be walkable bridges above the trees on the mountain. Other summer activities that will be added include new hiking and mountain biking trails, scuba diving, sailing, among others(the resort is located right next to the Atlantic Ocean). If you ever find yourself in Novia Scotia, go check out this underrated gem.
