Pablo Carreno Busta: Hamburg final will be most important match of year for me

World No. 13 Pablo Carreno Busta insisted it wasn’t easy at all playing Federico Delbonis in the Hamburg semifinal. Carreno Busta, seeded at No. 2, overcame Delbonis in two sets as he beat the Argentine 7-6 (2) 6-3 to reach the Hamburg final.

“It was a tough match today, but I am very happy because Federico is a really tough player,” Carreno Busta said, as quoted on the ATP website. “Always when I play against him, I am very uncomfortable. I am happy because my level today was very good.

“I probably played better in the second set, but I continued fighting all the time. I enjoy playing here, I feel comfortable here. It is my most important match this year [tomorrow]. I need to be really focused until the end again”.

Carreno Busta reaches his first Hamburg final

As not a single break point was seen in the first set, the opener had to be resolved in a tie-break. Delbonis, who was serving pretty good throughout the first set, failed to keep up his good serving in the tie-break as Carreno Busta claimed three mini breaks.

The two players were tied at 2-2 in the tie-break before Carreno Busta won five consecutive points to win a tight opener. After winning a tight first set, Carreno Busta had a chance to go up by a break early in the first set but Delbonis saved a break point in the first set.

Delbonis then had his first break points of the match in the second game but Carreno Busta saved four break points to level the set at one game apiece. Carreno Busta finally claimed the first break of the match in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead.

The Spaniard then broke Delbonis for the second time in the ninth game to book a straight-set win. Carreno Busta will be fighting Serbian tennis star Filip Krajinovic for the Hamburg title. In the first semifinal of the day, Krajinovic handed a straight-set defeat to fellow compatriot Laslo Djere.
