Leo Borg and the pressure of being the great Bjorn's son

Leo Borg, son of six-time Paris champion Bjorn Borg, turned 18 years-old last May. The Swede, competing in the 2021 Roland Garros junior draw, overtook Michael Westphal and Max Hans Rehberg to win a place in the round of 16, where he will now challenge the number 1 seeded Juncheng Shang.

In an interview published by the Punto de Break website, the little Borg spoke of his first victory in Paris, 40 years after his father’s last success in the French capital. He said: “It was an incredible experience, having conquered the victory is fantastic and I want to continue the tournament because on Thursday my father is coming to Paris and I want him to see me play here.

He always gives me advice, even if he wants to stay on the sidelines when it comes to training. I learned to better organize my life and, above all, to know how to manage everything it means to be a tennis player and the fact that my father is Bjorn Borg.

It is something that I will have to deal with throughout my career and I have to do well if I want to reach my goal, which is to enter the world top 10.” Bjorn Borg’s six successes at Roland Garros came between 1974 and 1981: since then he hasn’t played a match in the tournament, leaving competitions at just 26 years old.

Former world number one, in his career he also boasts five consecutive triumphs at Wimbledon and four finals at the US Open, always beaten by Americans Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe. Bjorn took part in only one edition of the Australian Open: that of 1973, when he was stopped by Phil Dent in three sets.

The Swede has also won two ATP Finals for a total of 64 career titles, which places him in seventh place in this special ranking (on par with Pete Sampras). The last edition of the French Junior Slam was won by the Swiss Dominic Stricker.
